IF: Lonely

Holy smokes this one took me a while!  I decided to try something different for a change: my patience.  I typically don't like taking more than a day to work on any single piece.  I get too impatient and/or start second guessing myself.  This time I had an idea and stuck with it.  Even though my mind was telling me that it was stupid or that it wouldn't make sense or would be too hard to see.  I had also skipped the past couple IF themes so I thought I owed it to whoever to put more effort, or at least time, into this week's piece.  Even after I had finished all those freakin' lines I felt like there was still something missing.  I figured out at the last minute that I needed to put the cap for the marker ( that's what that little black blob is) on the window sill.  For whatever reason, that seemed to complete it for me.  I know there are bigger issues that I should have corrected like, "where's the glass for this window?" or "aren't the shutters supposed to open to the inside of the room?".  Oh, well.  At least I got the marker cap.

That is genius! Well worth the effort... and thank you for putting it in because it's quality! I love illustrations like this, I'm sure the technique has a name but I'm a proper amateur so blows me... 'line drawing? cross hatching?'

either way, my favourite entry this week mate, great job

    1. Thanks for the praise! Yeah, it's cross hatching. It looks neat but damn it's a bit of work. Glad you like it. I guess I'll have to do more of these.

    1. Thanks. It actually took me a while to decide what the boy was going to do. Originally he was just going to be sitting there. Then I was thinking about giving him a balloon. I was worried that the marker on a fishpole thing wasn't going to come out right but I'm glad I went with it.

    1. Thanks. I'm glad I went with it over some other ideas I had.

  4. Lovely, and touching...and the beautiful detailed pen and ink is very Edward Gorey-esque. I have that same impatience when working on one piece longer than a day...love that the pen cap made it feel complete.

    1. I was going for an Edward Gorey style but I wasn't sure how it would turn out. I have no idea how he had the patience to do all the pieces he did with way more detail than this one. Thanks for the review.

  5. Wow, I love this! Line drawings really float my boat. Marker cap: great touch! Glass: artistic license. Shutters: have to open out so we can see the curtain, which is awesome. I agree with Sarah; this reminds me of an Edward Gorey drawing too. Brilliant idea and execution!

    1. Yeah. I have a hard time not over analyzing my pieces. I'm worry too much that things won't make sense that I forget half the time: this is art! How often does any of it really make sense. Have fun with it or don't do it. I don't always remember that.

  7. Very wonderful. I would not have had the patience for the brick detail, but you did and it was so worth it.

    1. I'm glad it was worth it. I'll maybe try more detail next time if I'm feeling up it. We'll see. Thanks.

  8. On the TV today were interviews with the Olympic athletes and one female swimmer was talking about how she pushes herself past her limits all the time. I think that is great to push yourself and do things your not quite sure how it will go or what will be.

    1. Thanks. I find I'm always more pleased with the pieces where I've tried something new or challenging than I am with the pieces I do that are easy. It does help when it works out the way you imagined.

  9. This... is awesome. Love the concept - it tells a really nice story and that is the magic of illustration isn't it. Beautiful linework as well. I know what you mean about hanging in there with one drawing - but I'm super glad that you stuck with it for this one, and it looks like I'm not the only one! Thanks for sharing your work. :)

    1. Thanks. I do like it when art doesn't just look good but also tells a story. Even better yet is when it gives the viewer the option to put their own story to it and get involved in the piece.
